Section 84, The Public Elections Act, 2012

As soon as is practicable after the Presiding Officer hasdeclared the polls closed in accordance with subsection (2) of section 73 and has complied with section 81, he shall, in his capacity as Counting Officer, in the presence of the persons referred to in section 83– (a) open each ballot box; (b) take out the ballot papers; (c) separate the ballot papers cast in respect of the election of members of Parliament from those cast for the election of a President, as the case may be; (d) in accordance with section 85 and 86, count the votes separately for each election if more than one is held on the same day; and (e) ensure that the ballot papers for the candidates and those for any other election held on the same day are kept separate.
